I'm now at the point it thinks it wants to render something and crashes
the box. Its actually not been quite the horror I feared. A lot of it is
small changes - the ones that did the damage being extra first arguments to
methods (and me not checking all the warnings hard enough). The via driver
has a load of clipping support I've yet to figure where to port and some of
the 'is texture unit enabled stuff' is wild guesswork. 

I'll upload a tarball of the current bits if people want it (or if nobody
else is hacking the via stuff to go into CVS if people want that)
