Sounds familiar, I've been experiencing similar crashes for quite a while now. Enemy Territory, Wolf and sometimes even OpenGL screensavers kill X pretty thoroughly, although sometimes my whole box seems to die -- network and even magic sysreq are gone. Sometimes it's just X that dies but restarting it does no good. Basically it looks as if the radeon's internal state was a mess, as it does absolutely nothing (keeps displaying whatever it was displaying when X crashed) until the box is rebooted. I'm currently using CVS DRI/DRM/Mesa from 29.6.04 with a radeon 9200 (ATI Technologies Inc: Unknown device 514d) on a box with a via kt333 mobo (VT8366/A/7 [Apollo KT266/A/333 AGP]). The hangs started soon after the CVS move, the last sf.net CVS build doesn't hang (at all? not sure, but very rarely). Also, some builds (including the 29.6.04 one) seem to have problems with 1024x768/32bit -- I get ~2FPS in ET, with ~40 in one-two second bursts. The problem goes away when dropping to a 16bit mode (~50FPS). Also, some builds (including the last sf.net one) seem to have no problems with 32bit modes. -- Aapi Hämäläinen Planning Officer SoftwareHouse lab.
