According to lspci, it's an "ATI Technologies Inc RV350 [Mobility Radeon 9600 M10]"
Try to load fglrx 2d driver first, then uload it and then use r300 driver.
I don't use fglrx, both because it's closed source and because I don't want to litter my system with a lot of files I don't know about. Would installing it help to debug the problem or is it just a workaround? If it's only a workaround, I can simply not try to use Xglx: it doesn't work anyway...
