The "drive type unknown" message is harmless.
It basically tells you that there is no SunOS disklabel
on this hdd, which is to be expected on a drive that
contains ntfs filesystems only.

Check the fdisk partition table, using
"fdisk -R -W - /dev/rdsk/c8d0p0"
That should give a hint which fdisk partitions

Are you perhaps running the current dev version 
of opensolaris?  And is the ntfs-3g/fuse support that
you've installed a binary distribution?  

In such a case the fix is to build and install fuse
from source, see defect 10384:
