Hi,

As part of a research program running by Dept. of Geography, University of the
Aegean, Greece, we decided to use dSpace as Document Repository. However, there
is a need to deposit a large amount of Spatial Data (i.e Shapefiles, KML,
geoTIFFs, etc). One key element about metadata for spatial data is the ability
to store and search by geographic extent (data's Minimum Bounding Box) using a
map. For that reason, we are trying to build dSpace in order to satisfy the
above requirement. You can view an instance of our implementation so far
here<http://geo-dspace.aegean.gr/xmlui/handle/123456789/4> (although in Greek).
The new functionality allows a user:
a) To define spatial data geographic extent using a map during item submission,
b) View an item's geographic extent on a map at full item record page,
c) Search for spatial data which intersects with user defined geographic area
criteria at search page.

We would like to inform you about this effort and ask whether and how this
development may be included in dSpace as add-on or extension. Also, we would
appreciate any suggestions or proposals about this functionality

Some notes about the development so far:
* use of Openlayers API for providing dynamic map user interaction

 * use of Lucene 4.0 BETA API to support spatial data indexing & querying
based on their Bounding Box. Lucene 4.0 comes with a spatial dependency that
supports topological functions on polygons (unfortunately Lucene 3.3.0 does not
support that), so we had to build dSpace with Lucene 4.0 and make the necessary
migration.

Thanks,
Vasilis Kopsachilis
