Dear DSpace Community -

As you may already be aware, DSpace Community Advisory Team (DCAT) has
been working on a proposal to improve the metadata support in DSpace.
The initial direction of this project was based on the results of a
community-wide survey. The recent DSpace Futures discussions also
highlighted the need for metadata enhancements. As the starting point
for enhanced metadata support, DCAT has finished drafting a proposal
that would lay the foundation for future improvements by updating the
existing Dublin Core Metadata Initiative (DCMI) schema to the current
Qualified Dublin Core (QDC) standard and ultimately implementing a fully
functional DCTERMS metadata schema. The proposal also includes some
suggestions for improving the protection of the schema standards as well
as laying the groundwork for some added flexibility to add other
standards and enabling a metadata infrastructure that supports other
hierarchical and relational data structures. In folding this work into
the DSpace Futures initiative, DCAT is hopeful everyone with an interest
in improving metadata support in DSpace will get involved with the effort.

The draft proposal can be found here:
https://wiki.duraspace.org/display/DSPACE/Proposal+to+Update+QDC+Registry+and+Add+DCTERMS+Registry.

Everyone from the community should feel free to add feedback in the
"Comments" section at the bottom of the page (or any of the subpages).

There will be a call to discuss the proposal on Wednesday, March 20 at
4:00pm EDT (20:00 UTC). DSpace committers, developers and members of the
community are encouraged to participate. To join this call, dial +1
