For security reasons I'm currently looking for a way to put DSpace and the handle server on separate machines. While doing so I thought about doing it with the newest version of the handle server. In contact with Andrea Bollini the question of the license raised an I took a look into the Hanlde System public license agreement (Ver. 2) which can be found at http://hdl.handle.net/4263537/5030.

I don't know under which License DSpace is using the handle software in the currently used version, but I have some concerns about the Handle License Version 2 which is in place for the newest version of handle software. As far as I understand paragraph 3. tells that it is not allowed to use handle prefixes that are not registered at CNRI and that everyone who wants to use the handle system (containing the software) has to enter into a Handle Service Agreement. As far as I understand that, everyone who wants to use the newest software version has to register his handle at CNRI and has to pay the corresponding fees.

Is my interpretation of the Handle System Public License Agreement (ver. 2) correct? Are there any special agreements between DSpace or DuraSpace and CNRI? How do we want to deal with the License on the one side and the problems with IPv6 in the old version? Do we have source code of the old version?
