Subject: Re: [Dspace-general] DSpace 1.7 discussion: Introductions
To: "Platt, Alice" <[email protected]>
Hello all,
I'm a political scientist at Temple University (Philadelphia, US) who
stupidly began a project to gather and archive teaching materials on
globalization--an archive we want to share with the general teaching public.
I came across DSpace in my research and have installed a test instance of
1.6 (xmlui) on my home laptop. I'm about to install it on some server space
I've begged off the University...so thought I'd use 1.7 so as not to fall
behind (My understanding is that you can't skip upgrades but have to go
through each to stay current?).
To my knowledge no-one at my school library or elsewhere is using Dspace so
I'm on my own here. On the other hand, like most academics my labor is
increditbly cheap and I like to learn...so I'm in at the deep end. I know
next to nothing about the software involved and have not actually done
server-side work before. But I got it working on my Windows Vista based
laptop and am ready to get going on the server. So, I've been reading the
various posts to DSpace General and DSpace tech etc with great interest and
some growing understanding.
I'm joining this conversation largely to listen and learn, and I want to
thank everyone invovled for their help and patience over the years with us
neophytes, who
doubtless continue to ask silly questions without looking in the
documentation first!!!
Best,
Alix Howard
