I wrote customised statistics for the four repositories that I'm looking
after. Three of these are publicly available:

http://otago.ourarchive.ac.nz/stats
http://researchcommons.waikato.ac.nz/stats
http://unitec.researchbank.ac.nz/stats

These links go to the statistics pages for the entire repository, which
include top author statistics; statistics pages for each author are also
available (and linked from the main statistics page).

My customisations build on the solr-based statistics that were
introduced with DSpace 1.6. I customised these quite heavily; the most
important addition for author statistics is that the authors of an item
are included in the data posted to solr for item page views and file
downloads. That way, I can then query solr for all item page views /
file downloads for a given author in the same way as it's possible in
the default solr stats to query for all item page views / file downloads
in a given collection etc.

There are drawbacks to including author data directly in the statistics
data. The alternative is something similar to what Peter Dietz described
in his response over on dspace-tech: get all of an author's item ids
(maybe from discovery, if you want to stick to solr) and then query by
those.

I'm happy to share more technical details of my customisations if you or
anyone else is interested.

cheers,
Andrea
