I'm sure it's possible in Solr, I just don't think it's configurable in DSpace. I think it's the facet.date.gap option: http://wiki.apache.org/solr/SimpleFacetParameters#Date_Faceting_Parameters So try to play with it if you want, but making Discovery add parameters to Solr might require changes in code.
