As Leif Longva points, the key aspect is the standarisation. In Europe, the Driver2.0 "standard" and Openaire project gave the guidelines for such declarations. Furthermore, the University of Minho issued the /Dspace openaire add-on/ to ease the adoption of those guidelines. IMHO this add-on is a "must" for european R&D institutions with Dspace pre-3.x. (I suspected that the new xOAI interface inherited some of that excellent work) With the xOAI inclusion in Dspace 3, it seems to me that the adoption of those guidelines will be easier (perhaps Joao Melo could validate that?) For those interested in the application of these concepts (metadata standarisation) to the real case of openness indication, see "Guidelines for content providers of the OpenAIRE information space" in http://www.openaire.eu/en/component/attachments/download/79

Is anyone aware of a DSpace repository that indicates, in harvestable metadata, the openness of particular items? We're getting requests from harvesters to incorporate as metadata indications of whether an item is publicly accessible (I.e., without restricted authorizations). Thanks in advance for any examples. Currently running 1.8.2 in our repository.

All best,
Sarah
