Hello, We tackled the same problem in version 1.4.2. Therefore we added extra DC qualifiers (bibliographicCitation.issue / volume / ...) which we also uses for a better structured input format (see http://193.190.8.15/odin/ - you can test this out with user name and login dspace). For every journal we have different collection. We created an application which uses a slightly adapted mods to present the journal in the volume/issue structure: see different examples at: http://www.uhasselt.be/bibliotheek/ao/aojournals.htm.
We don't have time to update our DSpace customization to 1.5. I hope that version 2.0 will solve a few problems like the limitiations of Qualified DC. Each of those provide links to a masked search page for individual articles, plus a list to an item that contains the full pdf for the journal.
