Hi Mika,

[I'm a bit late with this message and it looks as though your problems are to
do with the media filter, not the search indexer, but I'll send this anyway in
case it helps anybody]

I've had similar problems in the past, but only when indexing text with
non-ISO8859-1 characters in it -- I had to modify one of the Lucene search
analysers to handle macrons like ā, ē, etc.
Umlauts are definitely within ISO8859-1, so you shouldn't need to extend
anything, just make sure an appropriate search analyser is chosen on the server
that isn't indexing text properly. From dspace.cfg:

# Which Lucene Analyzer implementation to use. If this is omitted or
# commented out, the standard DSpace analyzer (designed for English)
# is used by default.
# search.analyzer = org.dspace.search.DSAnalyzer

If this line is commented out or the default analyser is chosen, I suspect
characters like umlauts and accents won't be indexed properly, and people
searching for 'paivitysta' won't get results for 'päivitystä', etc.
There's a "Latin1" analyser that might be better to use.

Cheers,

Kim
