A lot of things that are controlled by dspace.cfg in JSPUI are instead
controlled by tweaking the theme(s) in XMLUI.  And we do need a guide
to the features and most popular customization areas of the stock
theme transform (dri2xhtml and friends).

I understand your frustration.  I think that simple things like
turning a feature on/off or plugging in a simple value should be done
the same way in all UIs.  The difficulty is that layout configuration
data must find their way into the DRI document somehow, or be
otherwise exposed to the theme engine, in order to affect the layout.

There's probably some tricksy way to get at these data already but my
Cocoon skills are still immature.  I did start work on my own
approach, but other work intervened and it's not ready.
