This has been a confusion for some time. The Icom literature initially
referred to it as a repeater, but recent ads have been more succinct in
calling it an access point. When the Internet is available at the gateway
it is possible to connect to the Internet, however it does not act as a
simple relay between two ID-1 units. You can, however, add other services
that make this less of an issue. Chat servers on the repeater LAN, Computer
Aided Dispatch (see:
http://openises.sourceforge.net/tickets/ema_software_tickets_01.html), and
other such services.

That is an option, especially if you don't want to provide other services.

You might want to look at some of the T-1 speed 900 MHz. radios instead,
more speed for P2P and possibly a lower cost.

(See: http://www.avalanwireless.com/system_design.htm -- they have amateur
radio discounts if you contact them directly.)
