if a machine stops responding, we usually say it "hangs" - when we say a machine "crashes", we usually refer to the case where the OS goes down (in many cases with a panic), and then comes back up by itself (this is simplified, but you get the idea ;-) If you want to help narrow this down, I'd suggest you try the memalign probe alone and see how it behaves and whether there's any output.
