Better still get it from the horses mouth...........

        1. Install and run thunderbird. Set up your email details and
get them working. This creates a .thunderbird folder in your
        home directory.

        2. Now shut down thunderbird.

        3. Copy the .thunderbird folder across to your fat32 usbkey (eg
        in my case /media/usbkey)

        4. [Optional step] .Now delete the original .thunderbird folder
        and
create a symbolic link to the one on your usbkey. So in my home
folder i have .thunderbird as a sym link
        to /media/usbkey/EMAIL/.thunderbird
**** This step is optional, you can keep the old folder if you
        want ***

        5. Now the final step is to modify your prefs.js file.
prefs.js is found in a folder in .thunderbird with a wierd name,
        the
suffix of which is .default. For example on my system
        "/home/cgull/.thunderbird/y9p5oq9.default". Best you search on
        prefs.js
        to find it.

Now open prefs.js in an editor and search for path statements
        with
"/home" and fix the path to point to your usbkey.
Finally delete every line that contains "[ProfD]"

        6. Restart thunderbird.

        7. On the other PCs, install and run thunderbird first as
above, then close thunderbird, and then find and fix their
pref.js so its folders point to your usbkey. For these
additional PCs, you dont copy any files to the usbkey (ie omit
        steps 3 and 4)
Note for windows your folders in the prefs.js will start with
C:/ as is usual for windoze.

If you have any trouble with the above, let me know and I'll
        give you more detail....

A word of caution - when your usbkey fills up, thunderbird will
        not
allow you to delete emails. This is a bit of a gremlin
        "feature".
If this ever happens to you, and you are stuck, I have a
        workaround.
