Dan's right. There are issues with migration from Outlook to Thunderbird if your mailbox is large. The reason is the propriatery PST standard that Outlooks stores user's information in. Because details on the format are a closely guarded secret [Microsoft likes the big $], the only way to export the information is to call an Outlook MAPI function from an external program [like Thunderbird] and try to get the mails. Unfortunatelly, the method is slow and not all records can be exported, just as Dan mentioned.
One of the solutions was offered by Dan, but this is in case you'd like to go with Thunderbird. I like it, but it is still somewhat simplistic and does not always satisfy the needs of a seasoned Outlook user. Well, most people find Thunderbird as a breath of fresh air after "LookOut", as one of my friends calls Microsoft's e-mail client.
So, if you on a lookout for something more, say Personal Information Manager type of software [including calendar, notes, etc.], I'd say you try Ximian Evolution.

And good luck! Outlook may look ok from the outside, but when things are getting big, it kinda gets out of control.
