I don't think there is a 'most suitable'.  My experience is that most notebooks use a standard set of components:

Networking: Intel or Broadcom
Wireless: Intel Pro Wireless 2200
Graphics: Intel (low-end), Nvidia/ATI (high-end)
Sound: AC'97
PCMCIA: Texas Instruments

Modem is probably where you could come unstuck - but there are really two drivers that cover most - smartlink (AC'97) and hsflinmodem (older) (free version is crippled to 14.4k?).  SuSE includes the smartlink modem drivers.

The only I haven't got working (mostly because I can't be bothered - I've never used the things) is the smartcard reader.

The last time I wanted a laptop, I took my SuSE install disk with me since there is a nice hardware summary just after the system starts.  This usually makes the salesperson squeek a bit, and I've once managed to draw a crowd with this 'not-windows' thingy!

I'd suggest finding something you really like, checking the exact specs on the vendor website, then leaning (heavily if you must ;-) on LUGgers with a bit of experience - after all, isn't that what we do?

Regards

Sean
