My Vaio is like a mirror when it's turned off, but the anti-glare coating (which incidentally is the glossy bit) works incredibly well in all sorts of horrible lighting conditions and I have never found a reflection to irritate me. I like it far better than my old matte screen Acer. I do know there are varying qualities when it comes to the screen manufacturer and the coatings they use and your own personal experience may vary somewhat from mine.. but there must be a reason they are all going this way, and it sure ain't gonna be cause it's cheaper to make.. It is a little harder to clean though.
