The problem seems to be worse the newer your computer is. I've had power
dips where the clock radios all go to midnight and the VCR is blinking --:--
with the result that my PowerCenterPro ends up rebooting, but the 660av just
chugs right along as if nothing's happened. Back when I still ran my
MacPlus, that sucker could even have enough of an interruption that the
screen went most of the way dark, then it bloomed right back out to normal,
and never missed a beat.
(BTW, these power fluctuations are in suburban DC, with underground
utilities and everything! Probably twice a year, Virginia Power is out
"fixing" something and causes a dip or an outage. And at least once a year,
some transformer blows and knocks us out. But at least we don't usually
lose power from storms... But it does show you that you don't have to be in
an ancient house or in Mexico to potentially need a UPS.)
