Recently I was trying to install a new disk into an old Mac and ran into a strange problem which I've only heard of up to this point (but never actually encountered). Specifically I am trying to install a Seagate 4.3GB Cheetah 10,000 RPM drive into a 6100 (I know, it's not a Duo, but some people have had the same trouble while installing disks in Duos... :P). I used my favorite formatting tool (MediaFormatter) to create about 5 partitions on the disk and initialized them. All the partitions mounted successfully. I then shutdown to install a video card so I could proceed with installing the OS. When I booted again I got a Sad Mac error! Suspecting the video card, I removed it and tried again. Same error. I backtracked to the exact configuration with which I had initialized the disk, but still the Sad Mac. I've now found that if I disconnect the Cheetah it boots fine with almost any combination of hardware, but always fails if the Cheetah is attached no matter what else I do. Does anyone know what went wrong? More importantly, how can I recover from this? I cannot get the machine running to even reformat the disk (unless I disconnect the disk, which doesn't help).
