Then I wonder why when I tried 8.6 in a PB5300c (603e) it ran so poorly 
compared to 8.1, with which I replaced it again.

And, in a PB190cs (68LC040) here, 8.1 runs faster than it does in the 
PB5300c.

Oh well...
