Hi
I would like to add my oppinion to this discussion as i think that some of
the things that have been stated are true to form.
I to have a number of MAC powerbooks rangeing from a duo 230 to a 5300c
all have very different config and i have tested for speed on all of themto
compare this was to see which one was better for my daughter to use for all
of her schoolwork.
the main system that she uses for school is Clariswork and out of all the
machines i have she has found that the 520 powerbook with 20 mb of ram and
160mb HDD seems to run claris twice as fast as the duo 2300c that i
originally gave her this also has 20mb ram and a 1,1gb HDD we plugged the
2300 into a minidock and attached a monitor and a keyboard and mouse to it.
but for some reason the 2300 seemed to run slowly for her when she wanted
certain things so we wapped the two computers over and we ran exactly the
same programs and like i said it was faster.
This prompted me to test out all the other computers so i tested the 5300c
with 32mb ram and a 1.4gb Hdd against a 540c with 36mb Ram and a 500 Mb scsi
Hdd i ran netscape 2.02 for 68k mac on the 540 and netscape 2.02 for PPc on
the 5300 and in all the things that i did ie, connecting to the net opening
net pages sending email downloading files etc the 540 was faster.
I then tested it with apple works 5 and in everything bar saveing the files
i had done the 540 was faster again.
To that end it has changed my entire opinion of the mac powerbook and sorry
to say that i get a lot more pleasure out of useing my 540c than any other
powerbook that i have and i think that apple got it right with the 5xx
machines.
Sorry if anyone was board but i would like to here if anyone else shares my
oppinion on older macs.
