On my 56MB 2300 with a 3GB drive, I ended up with 8.1 after much trial and
error. For me, the only lack was sherlock internet search, but since I no
longer hook up to the internet with the 2300, that was not a problem.

The main problem was that 8.6 took about twice as much RAM for the system
as 8.1. I don't recall the specifics, but it was about 11MB versus 20MB,
with the other extensions I use.

As always, YMMV.
