I too dimly recall someone (maybe still among us?) having opened up the DAA and reporting to the list, but iirc he found a transformer and a little board with fancy electronics on it. Still it might be all about the European paranoia of having connected alien devices to the telephone line. Im tempted to open up my DAA (short for the euphemistic "Data Access Arrangement") - but it works, and the case is glued... Edgar
