"Last week I couldn't even spell engineer, and now I are one!"  (old poster). 
 I do tend to use a screwdriver and remove the plate....but as most phones 
use RJ11's at the phone end (do make sure it is not digital before connecting 
an analogue modem!!!), I also use a splitter to connect the Duo (the "two 
cable adapter" from WallyWorld, etc). If I must use the alligator clip cable, 
I often pop apart the phone.  Tends to be closer (grin).  Just remember 
Christmas....red and green wires are the ones you want.
