Thanks for the tip Jake.

I copied the 8.6 installer CD onto the 2400c HD across the scsi link - then ran it "native" with no probs.

 I did wonder if my current 2400c PRAM failure might be due to the
 fact that I installed 8.1 using the aforementioned SCSi Disk mode
 method.

 Maybe the installer puts code into the PRAM suitable only for the
 machine the Installer is being run on - not the destination volume
 machine - which in my case is a 2400c.

Installing the OS on the 2400c via SCSI Disk Mode on the B/W will not
touch the PRAM on the powerbook. However, it will install a copy of 8.6
with G3 specific code which your 180mhz 603e won't be able to handle.
