If by not recognized you mean you get a red "x" over the battery icon in the menu bar.

That means the charging circuit is gone, usually a $150-200 repair, because you must replace the
power I/O board.

It was left on standby with very low battery for 24 hrs immediately before the problem arise. I have tried a new battery which gets recognised very briefly.
