Good point, but it is still something else to carry.

The solution seems simple enough, get a couple of diodes placed under the
keyboard and tap into a power source ... but where is an accessible power
source inside a laptop?

Or, would the key mechanisms themselves block the light from coming through
the key and illuminating the letter? This might be a completely moot tangent
if so.
