Thank you, Paul ( Paul S Vail <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> ) and David (
[EMAIL PROTECTED]):
First, we are talking about OS 8.6 with the latest patch - sorry.
The GV Powerport software sort of worked up to 8.5.1, as long as you set
the port config to normal every boot (I noted the Color sync/PRAM post, and
hope for some feedback. Tried locking files). Otherwise, the external modem
would be very slow. Fax crashed the Duo like crazy during transmission.
Under 8.6, the port config=normal workaround no longer works, faxing still
crashes the duo, and the computer crashes frequently during data
connections., but desktop printing came back.
Thanks for the FaSTF tip - I actually have a copy as well as the Apple
software (which I'll try), but isn't the other software going to be part of
the problem (crashes during non-fax connections)?, so I'm not sure that
this will be of help. This situation has happened after clean installs on
two different machines. I'm debating deinstalling the modems before or
after clean installing OS 9. I should be able to access the infernal modem
in the absence of all of the GV software, or are you saying that your
configuration works with the GV non-fax software (e.g. Powerport control
panel, GV toolbox). I'm using the very latest GV software for this modem -
even downloaded a fresh copy.
At any rate, thank you much for your feedback - I now have better ideas on
how to attact this problem, and thanks to your input, several options have
been eliminated. I'm fairly sure but will confirm that the problem occurs
with conflict catcher enabling MacOS extensions and the GV softwares only.
Agree that it is unlikely that GV will rectify this. Maybe OS9 will be a
better host, but not holding breath
