My experience with the MacOS with versions starting at 1.0 is that after
7.1, there was a marked deterioration in stability. Prior to that, the time
between crashes was weeks or months. After that, crashes occurred several
times a day.
8.1-8.6 have become more stable, but still have more crashes than I had
with 7.1 and pre. I still get several crashes a week, even when not doing
something "experimental".
There was also a marked increase in required RAM from 8.1->8.5 and 8.6.
This casuese problems on machines such as the 2300c, which maxes out at 56
MB or RAM. Virtual memory use is OK for a desktop machine, but for a
laptop, it increases disk access, lowering battery life, and causing delays
if the disk has spun down. For this reason, I still use 8.1 on my 2300.
I think that these are the issues referred to. I still strongly prefer
MacOS, but the dramatic difference in stability and RAM footprint at the
time of MacOS 7.1 versus Windows 3.1 is a thing of the past.
