John,
Within minutes of installing 8.5, I felt that the system menus didn't pop
up as fast, applications definitely didn't launch as fast, and web browsing
with more than one window was painfully slow to render. This was with the
system set to defaults(VM on, pre-set cache, etc.). After rebuilding
desktop, zapping PRAM, scanning with both Virex and Disk First Aid,
customizing the cache and turning VM off it still felt much more
UNresponsive than 8.1...... this was after a low-level format and clean
install from the 8.5 CD.
I re-installed 8.5, then tried it all again, to no avail. So, I just worked
with it for a few months to become accustomed to 8.5, then 8.5.1, then 8.6-
with each revision hoping that I could get that pep back into my Comet.
Nope!
Eventually, after having some problems with my Japanese Language Kit, I
custom installed 8, then applied the 8.1 upgrade, then applied 8.5 Remote
Access because I loved it ease of use and setup. Once that was done, I had
a quick, light, and nible 2400c again, albeit not with the latest OS ;-)
RAM is not a problem, I have 112MB.
