I believe FreeInet <http://go.freei.net/www/> is the only "free" ISP that
offers a Mac version of their internet access software. The site lists
local numbers in several states, but it doesn't look like they have full
cross-country coverage, yet. Hopefully, the other "free" ISPs (ie.
AltaVista) will get off their tails and offer Mac users free internet
access as well.

If your friends will be gone only a month or so, why not set them up with
AOL. They can use the free hours the month they're gone and then cancel the
service when they get home. AOL probably has the best access number
coverage of anyone. While I don't suggest making a habit of this practice
(it's not fair to AOL), it could do in a pinch. Also, I believe AOL has a
few safeguards in place to deter doing this more than once a year.

Another option would be to visit public and university libraries. Many have
internet-connected PCs available for public use. If your friend's ISP is
set up for it, they may be able to access their email via the web. If the
ISP isn't set up for it, there are a few mail service sites on the web that
will do the connecting behind the scenes and present it in a standard
browser window.

Hope this helps.
