IT staff tend to be strange people... Not that I'd know anything since I
work in IT... ;)

I can't say I'm surprised that IT values hardware more than information.
Perhaps it's because they can fix hardware, but can't fix info. It's also a
bit easier to control, too, come to think of it.

Anyway, based on my personal experience with both Norton DiskLock (now
PowerOn Software's DiskLock) and the LaCie Silverlining password (part of
Silverlining Pro's formatting software), I would recommend:

1) Boot off of an external device (cd-rom, whatever), and run the latest
version of Apple's Drive Setup software.

2) Run Drive Setup, and do a low-level format of the internal drive. It'll
wipe out everything, and should write Apple's hard disk driver over the
existing one, thus getting rid of any security software that's been
installed on the Master Boot Record.

In multiple-disk settings, most security software will allow you to bypass
the disk with the software installed. It should give you a "cancel" option,
allowing you to access the other disks, but not the one which has had the
software installed. Most seem to work by writing a specialized driver down
to the disk which won't allow the Finder to mount them up to the desktop
without some sort of authorization scheme.

I hope this helps,

   -Nathan
