Sounds like you may not have a properly wired cable. Make sure the one
you're using is described as a Mac "hardware handshake" modem cable. Most
computer stores sell them, frequently even if they don't carry Macs. Also
make sure the modem is set up to use RTS/CTS hardware flow control (this
may be just a matter of choosing a reasonable high-speed modem script, or
it may be in the AOL software somewhere - perhaps some other AOL person can
clarify). Finally, if the modem script or init string isn't really set up
for your high-speed modem you may have to make sure the modem is ignoring
DTR drops, since many Mac modem cables wire RTS to DTR (this piece of
gobbledygook translates to the modem disconnecting as soon as a lot of data
flows down the line). If you have to enter an init string (beginning with
"AT"), it should contain "&D0" somewhere.

The cable is the most likely culprit.
