Among all my Macs, through all my years, getting telecom software to work
reliably with my Duo 280c has been consistently the most vexing.

Your problems sound very familiar to me. And -- while the advice you've
received is sound (e.g.: "modem script or INIT string", "cable is the
most likely culprit") -- I have an external Global Village modem with a
built-in cable, I don't use AOL, and I still have problems very similar
to the ones you describe.

FWIW - I've made it my "life's mission" to get reliable modem
communication on my Duo, and so far I've only come "close". I can almost
always get PPP/Remote Access to auto-dial my ISP and connect. Often, the
link will be rock-solid. However, sometimes, I'll get very low
throughput --- and ultimately the connection will fail.

As best as I can determine, problems begin when some parameter changes
(e.g.: docked, undocked, internal modem, external modem, AppleTalk on,
AppleTalk off, etc.), or when there's been a memory crash and parameter
settings don't get put back to where they were. Once my Duo gets
"confused" by "cobwebs" from a previous session, no amount of fiddling
will bring it back.

One "brute force" technique that always(!) works for me is to reset the
PRAM, and then rerun the OS-8 Internet Setup Utility. I know resetting
the PRAM seems the least likely --- but it works for me.

It would be more elegant to figure out which scrambled setting, on which
control panel is the culprit. But for now, the PRAM/Setup Utility voodoo
does get me reliable use of both my internal and external modems.

Hope this helps ...

Cheers,
jeff
