I've never heard of a NIC/modem replacement card, though that would be very
cool!

You can try to find an older Localtalk to ethernet hardware bridge like the
Shiva Ethergate or a Cayman Gatorbox, though they're not really that
portable.  I've used a Dayna etherprint to connect a duo to my home network
but it only does Appletalk not TCP/IP so bringing it in to school probably
wouldn't work out.

Or if there is another Mac you can hook it to you can use that Mac to run
Localtalk Bridge, which is now free from Apple.  No matter what, though,
it's going to be really slow!

Keep your eyes open for an ethernet Microdock, which is a very cool device.
The other option is a SCSI dock (easier to find) and a SCSI to ethernet
converter.  These two options cost actual money, though. . . .

You might be best off selling them or trading them both for a 5xx
powerbook--built in ethernet!
