Hello: Make sure that the modem port is set to "Normal" as opposed to
"Compatible" via the powerbook control panel or the control panels related
to the internal modem. If you're docked, appletalk to the MODEM port, Modem
connects to the PRINTER port. (If you're not docked, make sure that
Appletalk is off.) All of this may seem to be counterintuitive, but seemed
to get external modems to work up to OS 8.5.
