Don,

I use the Express modem in my 280 for all kinds of phone stuff, dialups and
a regular ISP and I find it remarkably stable and reliable.  The hard thing
with establishing a dialup connection is getting your communication program
set correctly (which I assume you have done if you use the same program
with the external modem that you are using with the internal) and possibly
changing your Powerbook Setup control panel to Normal when you use the
internal modem. You might also have to change the connect speed in your
comm program (ZTerm or Claris or Reflection).

It ought to be happy with dialup connections.
