I'm not a faxer (Email killed it for me) but I have had similar problems.
Specifically, the fax software grabs the exclusive use of the modem to
await incoming faxes. This prevents anything else from seeing the port. It
should all work fine if you just turn on the fax software when you want to
send a fax.
