Drew,

When more than a few of the required chips to build 500 series upgrades have
been discontinued, it's hard to point the finger at Newer Technology. Other
companies supplied Apple and Newer with these chips. When Apple told them
they no longer wanted any more of these chips, they simply stopped making
them. Since Newer's order wasn't enough volume to convince them otherwise,
the supply of new parts evaporated.
Sales of the 2400 upgrade were spectacular in Japan but lukewarm at best
domestically. So when a product sells slowly, it is always a potential
target for discontinuation. That is good business sense, not a psychotic
act.
Typical incoming email to Newer about 500 series and 2400 series upgrades
are from people who were waiting for some future date when they planned to
buy. Apparently a few people waited too long. The products were on the
market and shipping for enough time for those who really wanted to buy to do
so.
