Dean is right about the dangers of plugging non-phono audio sources into
the phono input, but unfortunately not about the Audio Tune-Up extensions.
Sadly, the audio-out port on the 2400 is horribly noisy, and no software
has been able to fix the problem. (Apple wasn't able to fix the problem
either, when I sent my 'Book back for repair.) Of course, it probably only
seems horrible to frequent digital-audio users like myself; normal users
probably don't notice it--and shouldn't try to, because once you notice the
problem it'll drive you crazy.
Anyway, if you're going to do much audio stuff on the 2400, the ideal
solution would be to buy the Digigram VXPocket PC card, which has
high-quality shielded inputs and outputs, among other nifty features:

You can also get the product bundled with BIAS, Inc.'s great audio software:

My personal Need : Expendable Capital ratio is not yet high enough for me
to purchase one of these myself, so I continue to use the built-in audio
input for recording to the PowerBook--however, I always copy the audio
files to a desktop machine or to a CD for output. The results aren't
perfect, but they're certainly better than recording to cassette tapes,
which was how I used to do it.
Good luck to you!
