I don't know whether there is a TIL, but the easiest solution is just 
to partition the disk in two parts. One thing you might think about 
is making a smaller partition with the classic file system and a 
larger one with the extended file system. Then you can plug into any 
computers with older systems (where only the small partition will 
show up).
