I had a Powerbook 520 with the same problem.  It turns out that the 500 
series AC adapter has two power supplies in it, and supplies power 
separately to (1) run the computer and (2) charge the battery.  If the 
2300 is the same way, maybe supply (2) is bad.  Then you need a new AC 
adapter.
