Tim,
Another possiblility is that one or both of the plastic rings in the
trackmarble (the rollers that get dirty) is split.  This has happened to me
twice now and I had to replace the complete trackmarble assembly.  This repair
is not too hard with the aid of a torx 8 driver, a PATIENT APPROACH and a
steady hand.  I have some of the marble assemblies but got a good deal from the
powerbookguy - about $30 delivered.  Your may also consider getting a floppy
dock and use an external mouse.  Good luck
