I had similar problems that disappeared after I erased the hard drive 
and installed a fresh copy of system 8.0 and the system 8.1 update on 
top of that.
A pain in the neck but it worked for me.

I suggest you try a power manager reset first and then update the HD 
driver with the system 8.1 HD utility. If this doesn't work, I'd do a 
full system install.
