Since you are backed up, it is a simple matter to reformat your drive as discussed,
reinstall the software and see if the problem persists. You have jumped to a few
conclusions that, at least where Macs are concerned, I don't think are justified.
Before you spend any money on a new drive, unless you just want to get a bigger
drive (http://www.PowerBookGuy.com), then I would suggest you at least try
reformatting your HD first. Often a corrupt driver will produce the kind
intermittent results you are experiencing.

As far as "rebuilding" your HD files using your zip and startup disk, I don't see
why not, but I suppose that depends on the backup software you used. If you used
something like Retrospect, you will need to reinstall that onto your hard drive
before you can restore your Zips. If you just copied the files over to the zip,
then you need do nothing else, just have a zip disk in the drive when you startup
with your disk tools disk and a Zip driver will auto load. Then just drag
everything back to your hard drive (old or new). When you are all done, I would
"bless" the System Folder by opening the System suitcase. Then restart. Easy!
That's why you should reformat your old HD first!
