I've got an update on this for anyone following this thread. Option, a
Belgian company who are one of the largest producers of mobile phone related
computer equipment in the world are planning to release a version of their
SoftRadius soft modem for the MacOS in Q3 this year. (It will support most
Nokia, Ericsson and Siemens phones.)

As yet I don't know whether this will support serial or only USB, or what
versions of the OS will be supported, but Option have had in the past a very
good record on things like this so crossed fingers!
