Last night the machine worked fine from its battery.  Today, the only 
thing that sees the battery is the control strip module, briefly, 
when the machine is first started up and the battery is removed and 
reinserted.  (That only happens the first time, though.)  And the 
PRAM isn't being saved when the machine is unplugged (my PRAM battery 
is dead, so I depend on the main battery for that.)

I've reset the Power Manager and the PRAM, but neither helps.  Ideas? 
Why does the control strip see a battery insertion?  (I would have 
expected that to be electrical, not mechanical?)
